sneezing panda!

I have watched this too many times to count and I still can’t stop laughing.

Birk Baehr: what’s wrong with our food system

DNA of fish inserted into the DNA of tomatoes? I didn’t know about that…but major ICK!

Props to Birk, and props to eating local/organic and REAL wholesome full-fat food!

On repeat: Bruno Mars

It’s been 5 weeks since I’ve listened to music outside of the gym – but I’ve been studying genetics and I’ve reverted. Anyway, this song has been on repeat since yesterday – it has me dancing for the first time in weeks. I like the positivity!

Growing back a pinky!

Article on CNN

I think this is a GREAT example of the future of medicine and clearly illustrates several things that I’ve learned since coming to medical school:

  1. Our patient population is extremely tech/internet-saavy; we’re all a hypochondriac in one way or another (thanks to sites like webmd or mayoclinic.org) and it’s becoming increasingly likely that you will get a patient who walks in with a huge stack of print outs who knows exactly what they have and what you are going to do to treat it.
  2. Not all that information is accurate though! As physicians, we need to be able to sift through all that information and discern what is viable and what isn’t – not only in terms of the research in general, but also in terms of whether or not it will benefit the specific patient.
  3. But the patient can totally be right! Physicians don’t know everything and we have to own up to it! It’s up to us to 1) stay on top of current clinical technology and 2) tell the patient we don’ t know – but look it up and get back to them!

I think the take-home message here is: patients and physicians are partners in the patients’ health care. Both have to contribute to this partnership to ensure that the needs of the patient come first and are addressed. (hey Drs. Mayo, I’m completely assimilated now to the Mayo culture!)

Orthopedics vs anesthesia

Hilarious. Basically, it’s bashing on orthopedic surgeons who have a rep for caring about operating only (and, according to this video, have no humanistic side to them). Not that I’m saying this is true, but the video is funny.

Note: asystole is when you have no heart beat aka you are dead.

My mom is going to the Philippines and I miss her so much already! I didn’t realize how much I talk to her until now! It’s so hard to have to schedule in talks, especially when we’re 24 hours apart and finals are coming up for me…I guess this is what this blog is for!

(Hi mom! Love you and miss you!!!)
